A top scientist who has been researching paua populations in Kaikoura is urging patience from fisheries while stocks fully recover from the earthquake.

Paua numbers and habitats took a major hit following the 2016 earthquake ... but there's been encouraging signs that the population is recovering while a fishing ban has been in place.

Dr. Tom McCowan from the Paua Industry Council says at least another two to three years is needed before serious discussions on lifting the ban should take place.

Makita is recalling six models of petrol chainsaws that may be an injury hazard.

They were sold at various stores between January 2002 and this month.

Makita says the automatic chain brake activation is not smooth and when kickback happens, the brake may not stop the chain.

The company says people should stop using their chainsaw immediately and take it to the shop they bought it from or to a Makita Authorised Service Agent.

See makita.co.nz for the models being recalled.

Tropical fruit growers believe there will be demand for New Zealand-grown bananas.

The Government plans to spend nearly 100-thousand dollars to help develop a banana growing industry in Gisborne.
