63 year old Garry James Patterson, originally from Queenstown, has pleaded guilty to charges brought by the Financial Markets Authority.
He failed to disclose to clients that he was unregistered when providing financial services.
He also obstructed the FMA investigation by failing to attend an interview without a reasonable excuse.
Judge Jane Farish sentenced him to 200 hours community work and three months community detention.
