A 300-million-dollar redevelopment at Auckland Prison aims to provide better rehabilitation and mental health treatment for our most volatile and dangerous prisoners

A 300-million-dollar redevelopment at Auckland Prison aims to provide better rehabilitation and mental health treatment for our most volatile and dangerous prisoners

Paremoremo is the country's only specialist maximum security facility for men.

Corrections boss Ray Smith says the old prison was built 50 years ago for a very different time and purpose - and the units were well past their use-by date.

The new facility will house up to 260 prisoners.

It includes a 50 bed treatment unit for those with significant acute mental health needs - and 18 safe-cells for those requiring the most care.
