The North Harbour mentor has been appointed the forwards coach under head coach Tana Umaga at the Blues, replacing Steve Jackson who didn't seek reappointment.
Coventry says while some people may not like the idea of the job, he's excited by the challenge.
He says as a coach you look forward to opportunities and being part of a solution to the problem.
Coventry's appointment completes the Blues main coaching lineup for 2019, with Leon Macdonald having already signed on as attack coach.
