Fertiliser company Ballance has been fined more than 82-thousand dollars over a 20 to 30 metre cloud of sulphur dioxide gas that escaped from its factory in Mount Maunganui

Fertiliser company Ballance has been fined more than 82-thousand dollars over a 20 to 30 metre cloud of sulphur dioxide gas that escaped from its factory in Mount Maunganui

The gas drifted over a nearby street ... two people who breathed it in were hospitalised.

People exposed to the gas cloud suffered effects ranging from a metallic taste, to difficulty breathing.

The discharge,in May last year, was caused by a communication botch up during a shift change .

The sentencing judge says an aggravating factor is two previous, similar offences in 1999 and 2014.
