Strong wind and heavy rain warnings are in force for central and southern parts of the country, and will remain in place overnight.
Northern parts of Fiordland will receive around 160 millimetres of rain in 16 hours.
Meanwhile Marlborough, Wellington and southern Wairarapa can expect gales up to 120 kilometres per hour.
MetService forecaster April Clark says once the front passes, bitterly cold southerly winds will kick in.
She says it should be a warm and rainy weekend, but temperatures will soon drop.
