The southerners have been beaten by the Waratahs in their Super Rugby be quarter final, blowing a 23-6 half time lead, to lose 30-23.
Highlanders assistant coach Glenn Delaney says it's a difficult loss to end their season on.
He says it hurts as they had the momentum, but lost it midway through the second half.
The Waratahs will play the Lions in the semi finals, after the South African outfit beat the Jaguares 40-23 in Johannesburg.
The Crusaders will play the Hurricanes in the other semi final.
