Electricity companies are refuting claims of collusion

Entrust is calling on the Commerce Commission to investigate arrangements by some of our biggest electricity providers to supply Tiwai Aluminium Smelter with artificially cheaper electricity.
Contact Energy's chief executive officer Dennis Barnes says he strongly refutes allegations of collusion or restrictive trade practises.
A Meridian spokesperson says Tiwai Aluminium Smelter is New Zealand's largest electricity consumer - and because of the smelter's scale and consistent demand, the owners can negotiate a sharp price.
And a Mercury spokesperson says any customer understands a bulk purchase, direct from a manufacturer's warehouse, could achieve a different price from something hand-delivered to your door.
