All Whites not going to Confederations' Cup just to make up the numbers - Mick Waitt says he is targeting the semifinals
13 February 2003
The All Whites are now realistically targeting the semifinals at June's Confederations Cup in France.
This follows Thursday morning's tournament draw in Paris.
New Zealand has been drawn in Group A with hosts France, Japan and Colombia.
Coach Mick Waitt was at the draw - he says they CAN make it past group play.
He says the draw was exciting to be a part of, but as you would expect, New Zealand did not receive a lot of attention from the media.
Waitt says the days of them going to these big tournament just for experience is over.
He says this time they need to get a result and hopefully get into the semifinals.
Waitt says to do that they need to target wins over Japan and Colombia.
The All Whites will kick off the tournament on June 18 against Japan at the Stade de France.
They will then travel to Lyons to meet Colombia two days later before the big one against France back in Paris on June 22.
Group B features Brazil, Turkey, Cameroon and the United States.
