Dennis Conner could be on a black boat
Mr. America's Cup does not rule out the chance of sailing for a New Zealand syndicate, although it all depends on funding
17 March 2003
Dennis Conner is not ruling out the possibility of sailing for Team New Zealand.
Conner says he was disappointed with the performance of the black boats during the America's Cup and wonders why no-one has been held accountable.
He says he wants to help.
Conner has bought some land here and there is a possibility he may be interested in racing for a New Zealand syndicate.
Conner says never say never, but his involvement in another America's Cup campaign, for Stars and Stripes or Team New Zealand, depends on whether funding can be found.
And while the boys in the big time may have foundered at the last hurdle at the America's Cup, on a smaller scale things are looking positive.
Yachting High Performance manager Peter Lester says the just completed pre-Olympic sailing regatta showed positive signs in both the men's and women's categories.
Lester says many of our current world champions, including Simon Cook and Peter Nicholas in the 470 class and Barbara Kendall in the board sailing, were looking better than ever.
A squad has been picked for a pre-Olympics regatta off Athens in August.
