Sci-fi fans will flock to convention
Fans expected to flock to sci-fi convention in Auckland starring actor Robert Picardo from Star Trek Voyager
12 April 2003
Twenty thousand dedicated fans are expected at a three-day science fiction convention starting in Auckland today.
The Armageddon Expo boasts a long list of celebrities who will be at the Aotea Centre to meet their faithful admirers.
One is Star Trek Voyager's the Doctor - alias Hollywood actor Robert Picardo.
It is the third time he has played the part of a doctor - once in a comedy, and also in the series China Beach.
He says he has spent 11 years playing a television doctor, and thinks he now deserves an honorary degree.
But Picardo admits he would be able to treat only fictional patients.
He doesn't know of any plans for a movie following the series, which finished screening here last weekend.
Picardo says there are rumours they will combine the various casts, using the most popular characters.
He says he would like to be a part of any such movie.
But he hopes it happens soon, because his character - a hologram - is not supposed to age.
