Proposal to strengthen walls and windows at Buckingham Palace for visit of US President doesn't gain favour of Queen
17 November 2003
The Queen is not amused.
The White House wants to carry out extensive renovations to parts of Buckingham Palace.
President Bush stays there for three nights during this week's state visit to Britain.
The US Secret Service is concerned about the threat of a September 11-style airliner attack, so they want to reinforce some walls and windows.
However London correspondent Malcolm Stuart says the Queen is not keen.
She takes the view that no special precautions were taken during the World War II, and does not see the need for them now.
