Island fire under control
Darkness and water shortage hindered tackling of fire on Rakino Island in Hauraki Gulf
17 August 2004
A fire that threatened homes on Rakino Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf is now under control.
The blaze began yesterday afternoon in a large home which was part of a luxury lodge and then spread to the surrounding land.
Firefighters were taken to the scene by helicopter and boat and battled the fire through the night.
Remuera station officer Esitoni Pauga says the house was well alight when they arrived.
He says the house fire was extinguished, but firefighters had difficulty dealing with the grass fire due to darkness and a shortage of water.
