Marist Rugby listening to the Pope
The New Zealand Marist Rugby Federation to review rugby on Sunday after warning from the Pope
14 September 2004
The New Zealand Marist Rugby Federation says it will take heed of warnings from Pope John Paul II.
The Pope, who played international rugby for Poland, told New Zealand bishops we spend too much time playing sports and not enough time going to church.
Rugby Development Officer Tony Meachen says Catholicism is not compulsory for Marist players these days.
But he says the church and god are playing as great a role as ever amongst the young players.
And he says you will see players who kneel down and thank god before a game and if they score a try.
Mr Meachen says the Pope's comments will certainly be a discussion point for them.
