    Prisoners' claims furore

United Future's justice spokesman wants victims to express disgust over further compensation claims by inmates

    15 September 2004
United Future's justice spokesman wants victims to express their disgust over further compensation claims by inmates.

Claims for another 18 prison inmates have been lodged with the High Court in Wellington.

MP Marc Alexander says that is disgusting.

He says the practice is abhorrent and cannot be allowed to continue.

Mr Alexander says the government could easily pass retrospective legislation to stop further compensation payments, but is instead sitting on its hands.

He says it could also put a freeze on any claims until legislation is introduced.

Mr Alexander wants a wider inquiry into the issue.

He says if the Government does not act now the situation will dramatically worsen.
