17 October 2004
A stopbank close to Foxton Beach township is likely to give way tonight, as it struggles to hold on to water in the lower reaches of the Manawatu River.
Staff from the Horizons Regional Council and the Horowhenua District Council have joined local residents in frantically trying to prevent the stopbank from giving way.
Local contractors working under temporary lights are creating a large, temporary stopbank to protect the township.
Sandbags are also being used.
The most critical time tonight is thought to be when high tide arrives at 12:36am.
Coastal showers are forecast for the area.
