Greens in for criticism over cloning bill
Judy Turner, United Future MP, criticises Greens for supporting human cloning bill while being against GE of plants and animals
11 November 2004
United Future is criticising the Greens for voting in favour of a bill they believe allows for the development of genetic modification of human beings.
MPs voted 102 to 18 in favour of passing the Human Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill which allows for human cloning, but for research only.
Green MP Sue Kedgley says her party supported the bill with deep reservations, but United Future MP Judy Turner is criticising the party.
She says the Greens are happy to monitor the genetic engineering of plants and animals, but not worried when it applies to humans.
The private members' bill was put forward by Labour MP Dianne Yates and has been in the ballot for eight years.
