    National breath-holding record broken

Freediver Marcus Thompson breaks national breath-holding record by 32 seconds - at West Auckland pool

    12 December 2004
An Auckland man has broken the national breath-holding record.

Freediver Marcus Thompson has broken the record by 32 seconds - lying face down in a West Auckland pool for six minutes and 42 seconds.

The old record stood at six minutes 10 seconds.

The record breaking achievement was held at Auckland's West Wave Aquatic Centre.

Mr Thompson says it has taken a lot of training to get to this point and his next goal is to break the world record of 8 minutes 40.

Marcus Thompson will be representing New Zealand at the World Diving Championships in Europe next year.
