Bare facts for nudists
One of two public parks in NZ that allows people to go naked decides nudists can use park only 2 months in year
6 February 2005
A cover-up policy by a South Island leisure park has nudists hot under the collar.
One of only two public clothes-optional parks in the country, Mapua Leisure Park near Nelson, has decided this will be the last time naturists can be nude on the beach all of summer.
Park manager June Dunn says the dress-optional policy will now be available at the Park only in February and March.
This has angered some naturists who say enforcing that kind of rule is like saying nudity is bad.
But June Dunn says naturists have their own parks they can go to, where they can be naked.
She says park owners are hoping the new policy will attract people who were staying away from the park because of the nudity.
New Zealand Naturists Federation spokeswoman Kay Hannam says they are disappointed the park seems to have focused on nudity.
