People in Banda Aceh heading for higher ground amid fears of tsunami following 8.2 magnitude earthquake
29 March 2005
Tens of thousands of people are streaming out of coastal areas across Asia following another killer earthquake.
This morning's 8.2 magnitude quake has brought back memories of the Boxing Day tsunami that killed nearly 300,000 people.
The worst-affected area this time appears to be Nias, off the Sumatran coast, where there are reports of dozens killed. Reporter Justin Hale in Jakarta says damage appears widespread with reports of several multi-rise buildings collapsing.
In Banda Aceh, Prass Prawoto says people are panicking about the possibility of another tsunami and are heading for higher ground.
John Aglionby from The Guardian newspaper, who is also in Banda Aceh, says the earthquake was so strong that his knees buckled as he tried to walk. There are reports of aftershocks in the area.
