NZers not web security-savvy enough
Personal details such as bank account numbers still being put over the Internet by NZers despite their concern for security
5 May 2005
A new survey shows New Zealanders may be concerned about online security, but still provide personal details over the web without taking precautions.
The survey, for IT security firm Symantec, shows 75 percent of the people spoken to passed personal details, such as bank accounts or credit card numbers, over the net.
One fifth of those people took no proactive steps to check for online fraud.
However, there was some concern shown over online security risks, with three quarters of people avoiding downloading any material at all, and more than half refusing to reveal their email address.
All but four percent said they had been affected by spam; 85 percent had been hit by so-called "adware" and 77 percent by viruses.
