Investigators are warning there is more than meets the eye when it comes to illegal casinos.
Auckland man An Yi Li has been fined $12,000 plus costs, for his involvement in an illegal casino. His conviction is the first under the Gambling Act.
Gambling investigators found the outfit after customs staff at Auckland Airport uncovered gambling equipment being imported.
Internal Affairs Deputy Secretary Andrew Secker says often profits from such set-ups are used for more sinister dealings including extortion, drug trafficking and violent crime, although he says there is no evidence to suggest that is the case in this particular situation.
