    Chase crash kills 3

Three young men are dead after a horrific crash on Auckland's northwestern motorway.

    24 December 2006
Three young men are dead after a horror crash on Auckland's northwestern motorway. After a short police chase just before four o'clock this morning, the driver lost control of the car on the St Luke's offramp, clipped a barrier and crashed through a fence in to trees.

Police had earlier pulled over the car in the central city when they saw one of the youths standing up through the car's open sunroof. The occupants were drinking, and during the subsequent chase were driving at more than 140 kilometres an hour before the car went out of control. The vehicle flew through the air, flattening a fence and some trees, before landing in someone's backyard.

Neighbours say they did not hear the car coming, but the accident itself sounded like an explosion. They say the offramp is a regular haunt for boyracers, and it was only a matter of time before tragedy struck.
