Healthy schools requirement canned
The Government is ending a requirement the former Government instilled, which made schools sell healthy food and drink
5 February 2009
One of Labour's most controversial dictates to schools, making them sell food and drink that is healthy, is being scrapped by National.
Education Minister Anne Tolley says schools should be adult enough to make up their own minds.
Mrs Tolley says the feedback she has had from schools is that the requirement created confusion, particularly when it involved fundraising events. She believes boards of trustees should be aware of what good and bad foods are.
Mrs Tolley claims the rule created outrage when it was enforced last year. She says it has not stopped kids from taking unhealthy food to school, or stopping at a pie shop on the way.
