What they said - best 2016 quotes

In a year where New Zealand got a new PM, was shaken again by a big earthquake and enjoyed Olympic success there were plenty of quips to keep us entertained.

    27 December 2016

In a year of seismic shocks, New Zealand had its fair share of moments that were best encapsulated with a quote.

"Clearly the prime minister does not believe the superficial polls any longer." - Winston Peters can't help himself

"This is a derriere-covering exercise" - Peters on the national policy statement on housing

"The connection between sexual devices and sovereignty is not immediately apparent to me." - Labour leader Andrew Little on trying to work out Josie Butler's protest action involving the dildo.

"Sex just can't be that good." - Green MP Denise Roche on Brian Tamaki's statements that homosexuality causes earthquakes

    ADVICE

"As always, swimmers make their own judgment whether they choose to share the ocean with its regular inhabitants." Senior Sergeant Karl Konlechner on reports of a large shark seen off Mt Maunganui

    SPORT

"I asked them if they kept their mouth shut." What rower Hamish Bond quizzed the Serbian pair after they went into the drink at the polluted Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas rowing venue at the Rio Olympics.

"On the way to early-morning training I just slipped going down the stairs. I'm a swimmer - we're not made for land." - Swimmer Matthew Stanley on how he got the ankle injury which limited his build-up to the Olympics.

"Names are hidden, positive tests are hidden for bribe money. It's a big problem." - Kiwi runner Zane Robertson on the doping cover-ups in Kenya.

"That girl is the Olympic spirit right there" - 5000m runner Nikki Hamblin after US runner Abbey D'Agostino helped her to her feet after a tumble in their heat.

"I said if I won a medal I'd never take it off. I think I might shower with it. I know it doesn't rust." - Lydia Ko after claiming a silver medal at Rio

"Buy a new set of lungs." Sonny Bill Williams to Quade Cooper on how to survive in the gut-busting top level of sevens rugby.

"You can tell that she's a negotiator. I've never won an argument with her in my life." - Dylan Kelly describing his mother, the late union leader Helen Kelly

    ANIMALS

"You're a clever cow to skip and dance while the land beneath you is disappearing down the hill." - Farmer Derrick Milton after helping to rescue three cows stranded by the Kaikoura earthquake

"I do name a lot of my animals as an insurance policy, because if you name a chicken Meryl Streep, in all fairness, you can't eat Meryl Streep." - Sam Neill explaining his animals' names on The Graham Norton Show

"If Americans were given a choice, they would have a gun on their flag." - Comedian Matt Stellingwerf at the Billy T. James 2016 Stand up Comedy Awards
