NZ shooter Rooney struggles in New Delhi

Kiwi Olympic silver medallist Natalie Rooney finishes well down the field at the first World Cup event of the year in India.

    25 February 2017

Decorated New Zealand shooter Natalie Rooney has struggled at her first major competition of 2017 in New Delhi.

Rio Olympic gold medallist Rooney was 21st in a field of 29 trap shooters at the first ISSF World Cup.

The event was her first significant event since being crowned overall World Cup champion following a dramatic finale in Rome last October.

Two months earlier, the 28-year-old became New Zealand's first Olympic shooting medallist in 48 years.

The Italian-based Rooney's radar wasn't attuned in India, scoring 61 points out of a possible 75 in qualifying to miss a place in the top-six final by five shots.

Australian 21-year-old Penny Smith went on to win a maiden World Cup title, heading off London Olympic champion Jessica Rossi of Italy.
