    Brief forecast for the Mountains up to midnight on Thursday 02 May


    north island



    Tararua Forest Park
    Heavy rain, falling as snow to 1300 metres, easing to isolated showers this morning.

    Remaining North Island mountain areas
    Cloudy periods and a few showers.

    WINDS
    Westerlies, gale in exposed places, but changing gale southerly through the Tararuas for a time this morning.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    About 1800 metres.


    south island



    Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks, also the Kaikoura ranges
    Fine spells and isolated showers.

    Southern Alps
    Fine.

    Fiordland
    Cloudy periods. A few showers, mainly south of Doubtful Sound, falling as snow above 1000 metres.

    WINDS
    Southwesterlies, gale in exposed places.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    1600 metres in the north sloping to 1100 metres in the south. Rising to about 3000 metres in the west from Mt Cook to Mt Aspiring this evening.
