    Police have named a man who drowned after running into the sea while fleeing Police at Mt Maunganui


    He was 37 year old John Rawiri Piripi Pitihira - and was a local.

    He, and two others, tried to escape Police early yesterday morning - after a burglary was reported at a Surf Road building site.

    A post mortem examination has been completed and the results have been referred to the Coroner.
