Data improvements for counting vaccine coverage will better include Maori and Pasifika

Data improvements for counting vaccine coverage will better include Maori and Pasifika

Health Ministry is making changes following criticism from Stats NZ for basing jab rates off a dataset called Health Service Utilisation 2020.

It captures people that have interacted with the health system in 2020, but is known to undercount Maori and Pasifika.

Auckland University virus modeller Dion O'Neale says people in these groups may tick a false ethnicity when interacting with health services.

He says they may notice they get different service when someone opens their file and sees non-Maori - an issue backed up by many studies.
