A man is facing multiple charges in Whakatane court today, after allegedly taking three people hostage and firing at Police last night

The incident occurred in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, when Police approached a suspicious vehicle on State Highway 30.

After the firearm was discharged, Police retreated and the 31-year-old allegedly took a vehicle.

The man then allegedly held hostages on Hydro Road, including a victim in their seventies, before surrendering around midnight.

The Kawerau man faces eight charges, including kidnapping, threatening to kill, and wilful damage.
