The Herald understands a senior detective quizzed the Ashburton Work and Income killer last week at Auckland Prison about the murder of 15-year-old Kirsty Bentley in 1998.
Tully lived opposite the Bentley's South Street home in Ashburton for around three years in the early 1990s.
Tully told police last week he was living in Nelson when Bentley disappeared ... and that he left for Australia with his wife a short time later.
It's understood Tully's alibi looks likely to stack up and police are satisfied he was not involved in Bentley's abduction or murder.
Tully is serving life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole of 27 years for the WINZ slayings in 2014.
