A severe thunderstorm watch from MetService as heavy rainfall batters Northland
2 June 2018
A frontal rainband in the north Tasman Sea is spreading heavy rain southwards over the north of the North Island.
MetService says localised downpours could reach 25-40 mm/hr.
The Northland Regional Council website shows flooding has extended to SH10 from the Kaeo River.
MetService meteorologist Ravi Kandula says since 10 this morning there's been almost 90mm of rain in Kerikeri, 80mm in Kaikohe and 60mm in Kaitaia.
There'll be heavy rain through the Eastern Coromandel Peninsula and parts of Auckland overnight.
Mr Kandula says strong winds have so far been confined to areas north of Great Barrier Island but will pick up in Auckland overnight.
