Fire and Emergency found the vehicle partially submerged in Masterton's Henley Lake around eight last night.
Police say the mother had got out to stretch her legs, leaving the van in gear.
It rolled into the lake with dad and four children, aged between 3 and 16, inside.
Passers-by used a waka ama to row out and rescue the family.
They found somewhere else to stay last night, with the campervan company to arrange retrieval today.
