43-year-old Wiremu Abraham forced his way into the victim's home in 2003, with a balaclava and a knife, and raped her while her children were sleeping in the adjoining rooms.
He left the condom he used behind, and the case went cold until last year.
Police took his DNA in 2018 when he was charged with sexual assaulting another woman... when the DNA was added to the database, it matched the sample from his condom.
He was sentenced to eight years and one month in jail in the Manukau District Court yesterday.
Judge John Bergseng says the victim's suffered significant mental trauma, and her life has never returned to normal.
