Late last month, a routine biosecurity check revealed evidence of the rodents on the island in Lake Rotorua.
Mokoia Island Trust Chair Rawiri Bhana says at least two DOC dogs and their handlers will come to help this week.
He says the dogs are trained to not attack kiwi or other native birds - but to yelp if they pick up the scent of a rodent.
Bhana says so far, they've caught several large rats.
