A man's cries for help alerted people on Petone beach - but the man in his 30s died on the trip to tend a fishing net last night

He was in a small inflatable boat - and not wearing a life jacket.
He got in trouble not far from shore and he was recovered by a Westpac Helicopter crew and the Lady Elizabeth IV Police launch.
Wellington Harbourmaster Grant Nalder is stressing the importance of wearing a life jacket.
He says it's easy to accidentally end up in the water.
