Figures from the Real Estate Institute show median house prices have increased by 16.4 percent across the country when compared to last year, with seven regions hitting new price records.
The number of house sales in August is up nearly 25 percent from last year, despite the continued decline of properties for sale.
One Roof editor Owen Vaughan says places like Gisborne and Christchurch are seeing much more 'heat' in their auction markets than Auckland.
He says Christchurch has been pretty flat for the past three years but now there is renewed interest in the market because of affordability.
