Australia's Max Giuliani wins silver at world short course swimming championships in Budapest

Max Giuliani wins a silver medal in the men's 200m freestyle to cap off Australia's campaign at the world short course championships in Budapest.

Max Giuliani has won a silver medal to cap off Australia's campaign at the world short course championships in Budapest.

Giuliani posted an Oceania and national record with a time of one minute and 40.36 seconds to finish runner-up to American Luke Hobson in the men's 200m freestyle final on the last day of the world titles.

The Australian moved from fifth place after the first lap to be in second position at the 150m mark.

But he could not chase down Hobson, who set a world record of 1:38.61.

Australia finished the meet with 12 medals, headed by the two golds won by Lani Pallister (women's 800m freestyle) and Elijah Winnington (men's 400m freestyle) earlier in the week.

Pallister (1:51.75) was fourth in the women's 200m freestyle final behind Hong Kong's gold medallist Siobhan Haughey (1:50.62) on Monday morning AEDT.

Australian teammate Leah Neale (1:53.21) finished seventh in the final.

Meg Harris (23.73) was fifth in the women's 50m freestyle final, with American Gretchen Walsh breaking the world record with a time of 22.83 to claim gold.

Later on the final day in Budapest, Walsh swam the butterfly leg to help the US win the women's 4x100m medley relay in a world-record time of 3:40.41.

Walsh won seven gold medals and set 11 world records — including nine in individual events — in Budapest.

Thirty world records were set across the six days of the championships.
