Fire and Emergency say they received reports of the fire on Heaphy Street at around 7.30.

Five fire trucks were sent to the scene.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman says it's treating one person at the scene for smoke inhalation; they're in a moderate condition.

Videos from the scene show flames shooting into the air, with large black plumes of smoke.
