The Duffer Brothers have no interest in revisiting the core Stranger Things characters in the future

Matt and Ross Duffer - who created Netflix's sci-fi hit and are still showrunners for the upcoming fifth and final season - have reiterated that this really is the end, and any spinoff series would have to stand on its own without any of the original actors making an appearance.

Ross told SFX magazine: "This really is the end of the story of Eleven and Mike and Lucas and Dustin and Steve and all these characters, and Hawkins specifically.

"You don't want to do something in 20 years where a bunch of characters are like, 'Oh, we better get Mike back, he knew how to handle this!'

"That's not what we're interested in. We do really want this to be the end of this story, this journey for these characters.

"We're being very careful to make sure nothing that we're doing is going to step on that."

Matt agreed, although he admitted he's teased the cast about doing a U-turn if the siblings "need a paycheque".

He quipped: "I would joke with our cast that in 20 years, if our careers have really floundered, if we need a paycheque, we can always crawl back, like another rift has opened in the Upside Down.

"But no, we've said everything we want to say about those characters and the Upside Down.

"There's not really anything else worth exploring. The book is closed, and the ending wouldn't be very impactful if we left it cracked open for some sort of sequel."

Meanwhile, Ross pointed out how the finality of the upcoming season created a special atmosphere on set.

He said: "There's something about everybody knowing that this is the last time you're ever going to do this.

"This is the last time you're going to be speaking liens as these characters, the last time we're ever going to write these characters and film these characters.

"There's something that happens psychologically when you know it's the last time you're ever going to do it.

"Everyone just put absolutely everything they had into it. Regardless of how people respond to this season, we all know that we put absolutely everything we have into it."
