A teachers association says it backs changes to NCEA Level One - as long as teachers are supported

A teachers association says it backs changes to NCEA Level One - as long as teachers are supported

A government advisory board reviewing the NCEA qualification system says it's in need of a shake-up.

It's recommending scrapping external exams in Level One, reducing work load and focusing on a school-based project instead.

Post Primary Teachers' Association President Jack Boyle says the assumption that having fewer credits available will enable teachers to put more attention in project-based learning's untrue.

He says there'd need to be plenty of support for teachers.

Jack Boyle says there'd need to be good change management and resources for teachers on how to develop good project-based learning.
