Aucklanders will be able to put their food scraps out for rubbish collection under a new waste management plan voted for by councillors today

Aucklanders will be able to put their food scraps out for rubbish collection under a new waste management plan voted for by councillors today

The city's already started trialling a third rubbish bin for food scraps in Papakura, but plans to phase in the system over the next few years.

The council plans to charge households 67-dollars a year for food scrap collections.

Once that's well embedded the council then plans to shift the current weekly general waste collection to a fortnightly pay-as-you-throw system.

A number of submitters to a hearing on the waste management plan asked that people be able to opt out of the food scraps collection - but panel chairwoman, councillor Penny Hulse, says that's not practical.
