The adult Bennetts wallaby is hundreds of kilometres away from an established population.
The Otago Regional Council will search the area around Whare Flat and Three Mile Hill.
A video shot by Greg Wisnesky and posted on social media, shows the noxious pest hopping along the side of Whare Flat road before disappearing into the bush.
The council is concerned if the marsupials were to establish in the hills around Dunedin, they'd be very difficult to remove and cause significant damage.
