Wellington police accept they should not have held a suicidal man in custody

Wellington police accept they should not have held a suicidal man in custody

Officers detained the man for a mental health assessment after he tried to commit suicide in October 2016.

The man tried to commit suicide again in his cell

In a decision out today, the Independent Police Conduct Authority says the should have been taken to hospital or assessed at home.....or at the very least monitored constantly while in custody.

Wellington District Commander, Superintendent Sam Hoyle accepts that a District Custody Unit is not the right place for a person suffering significant mental distress.
