The league has awarded a team licence to Swansea City co-owner Romie Chaudhari, who also owns a stake in the Breakers.
He will now work with the league to select the best location for the new club, which will join the competition for the 2019/20 season.
Rams manager Caleb Harrison says there's a lot of interest in Canterbury, and for a team to be successful in the Australian basketball league it needs support from the public and corporate sponsors in the city.
Melbourne, New South Wales, the Gold Coast, and Tasmania are among the locations that will be considered.
