2014 winner Vincenzo Nibali has abandoned the Tour, after fracturing a vertebrae in his back when he was brought down following a tangle with spectators near the top of the climb up Alpe d'Huez .
Sprinters Dylan Groenewegen , Fernando Gaviria and Andre Greipel have been unable to finish the 12th stage, while last year's runner-up Rigoberto Uran pulled out of the Tour at the start of the day, after failing to recover from injuries sustained in a crash on stage nine.
Welshman Geraint Thomas will again wear the leader's yellow jersey tonight, leading his Team Sky team-mate and three-time defending champion Chris Froome by one minute and 39 seconds.
