Road snowfall warnings have been issued for alpine passes in the South Island

Up to eight centimetres could fall on the Lewis Pass - with warnings also issued for Arthurs' Pass and Porters Pass.

State Highway Seven at the Hanmer turnoff to Springs Junction is closed due to snow.

Chains are needed and caution is advised on State Highway 73 Springfield to Arthur's Pass due to snow and ice on the road..

And there are more snowfall warnings further south - for Lindis Pass, Crown Range Road and Milford Road

State highway 94 from Lower Hollyford Road Intersection to Chasm Stream Bridge is closed due to Avalanche Hazard
