State Highway 35 Cape Runaway, east of Opotiki, will remain closed until early next week, after four thousand cubic metres of debris came down last night.
NZTA Bay of Plenty spokesperson Rob Campbell says they are committed to re-opening this vital route as soon as possible - but the safety of workers and motorists will not be compromised.
The only alternative is to go through the Waioeka Gorge on State Highway Two, which is still down to one lane from an earlier slip.
Rob Campbell says the gorge could close again if there's heavy rain.
