Auckland University researcher Dr Helen Petousis-Harris has been given a 200-thousand dollar grant from PHARMAC and the Health Research Council to look into when it's best to go ahead with the jab.
She says there's a delicate balance - too early and the infant's unlikely to respond well, too late and the baby's vulnerable to the disease.
Researchers say New Zeland gives the jab at six weeks, while most other countries give it at eight.
