Judge reserves decision in bid by serial rapist Malcolm Rewa to avoid third trial
A judge has reserved his decision in a bid by serial rapist Malcolm Rewa to avoid a third trial for the murder of the Auckland woman Teina Pora was wrongfully convicted of killing.
30 July 2018
Rewa is already serving preventive detention for raping Susan Burdett and another 24 women.
In two previous trials, juries were unable to reach a unanimous decision on whether he killed Ms Burdett.
Rewa is scheduled to go to trial again in February - but his lawyer is applying for a permanent stay of proceedings.
He says too much time has passed and there's been too much prejudicial media coverage, including a TV doco-drama last Sunday about Pora's case.
